Effective ayurvedic treatments for painful diabetic neuropathy



What produces pain in diabetic patients?

Diabetes being a common problem in both men and women is known to cause quite a few complications. One of them is painful diabetic neuropathy, which is mainly a disorder of nerves. As nerves are not healed under the presence of excessive glucose and toxins, they are not able to transmit impulses from one to another from the level of spinal cord and brain. As a result, pain, tingling and burning is felt in hands, feet or legs. Ayurveda puts the fire element of the body in place which is the prime reason for neuropathy.

Ayurvedic diagnostic methods

a)      Patient’s history:
Physical making, attitude, age, sex, family history and current medical problems including history of previous surgery are noted at the first attempt. This is the first step to detailed diagnosis to comprehend imbalance of functional elements.

b)      Pulse rate:
 Disturbed elements of the body like water, fire or air are checked as the doctors notes the pulse rate which could be feeble, fast or normal.

c)       Retinal examination:
Close examination of the eye is very important. Eye color, shape, puffiness and size depict the mental state, dullness, anxiety or depression levels.

d)      Tongue appearance
How the tongue looks, presence of coating, color changes or any spots etc are important as different areas of tongue are related to our body organs. 

e)      Nail changes:
Both functional and physical elements can be determined by nail color, size, brittle or soft nails.

How does ayurveda cure diabetic neuropathy?

Ayurveda has a completely natural approach towards neuropathy diabetes. The main goal is to encourage a healthy healing and to make the body free of chemicals and poisonous toxins thus nourishing the degenerated nerves and tissues which is making ayurveda a treatment of choice for many patients.

Treatment for neuropathy

Treatment begins with detoxification so that the channels for blood circulation are opened first and toxins are removed subsequently. Oleation is done by ingestion of pure ghee on empty stomach. Many sessions of body massages and scalp massages are given by herbal powders and pastes so that nerves are triggered for activities. Later, butter milk is poured on the forehead to give relaxation to nervous system and fermented medicinal liquid is poured on the body for about 40 minutes to improve circulation.

Purification begins with purgation and emesis which is intake of herbal medicines to supplement the body systems and then making patient vomit to eliminate toxins from gastro intestinal system respectively. Medicinal enema is given for colon cleansing.

The body is then replenished and rejuvenated with oral medicines, diet regulation and active exercises like yoga.

Lifestyle tips

Plenty of green veggies, fish, bitter guard and water are good for diabetes. Smoking and alcohol cessation is recommended while excess sleeping is not suggested by many doctors.

Drink water kept in copper vessel and take few margosa leaves every day. Make sure to maintain healthy eyes and feet.
