Treatment for Incontinence

Once children begin understanding their body’s natural processes, it is very natural for parents to give them potty training. However, we come across many children who encounter the problems of bed wetting. This can not only happen with kids but also with adults of any age group. It’s basically an inability to control the urine in the urinary bladder till the time the individual is in a position to pass urine. In medical terms, this illness is termed as Incontinence.

The reasons why incontinence occurs could be physiological, psychological, or pathological. That is why the treatment for incontinence depends solely on the cause diagnosed. The specificity of the treatment also depends on the severity of the symptoms and the extent to which they interfere in the individual’s lifestyle. Medications, retraining, and surgery are amongst the common therapies that are used for such patients.

Some individuals recover very easily by making simple changes in their lifestyle and daily habits. Medical science has even invented devices that can be used for treating those bladders that are overactive and lose sensations. Even in worse case scenarios, surgical options have been a blessing to fight with the problems of incontinence. These days a number of medicines have come up that help in increasing the sphincter or pelvic muscle strength so that the bladder relaxes and is able to hold urine in more quantity.

Recent researches have come up with Botox as a treatment option for incontinence. The neurological conditions that lead to incontinence can be treated with Botox in a very effective manner and within less time. Through the urethra, Botox is directly injected into the bladder of the patient with the help of local anesthesia under supervision of urologist. It paralyzes the bladder leading to a low bladder pressure and lesser involuntary bladder contractions, whichare basically the main causes of urinary incontinence. Most patients are very pleased with this sort of treatment but few of them have suffered with an infection or bleeding in the urinary tract. However, their percentage is very low. Most importantly it does change one’s quality of life.

Manytimes people are also advised pelvic floor exercises in which Kegel’s exercise is most common as it repeatedly helps in contracting and relaxing of muscles in the pelvis. This treatment too is very simple and of nominal cost so patients are also comfortable.

Urinary incontinence is very much common in dogs too. For them the causes could be abnormalities of brain and spinal cord that controls the bladder function. Urethral Sphincter Mechanism Incompetence is the most common of the diagnosed incontinence. Young animals with birth defects may also suffer with incontinence. Also, pets with partial blockage of the urethra because of stone or tumors often show incontinence.

Surgical methods of treating incontinence usually imply operating or correcting an ectopic urethra. Plastic surgeryis performed with help of Botox that are also very effective in solving problems of incontinent patients. Incontinence is a situation that at times leads to embarrassment however; one need not feel so as it’s purely a medical problem. Proper therapy will help patients get rid of incontinence for good.
