State-of-the-art disc replacement device introduced by BYU Professors

Disc replacement surgery

A disc can be a source of variety of complication to spine and structures surrounding the spine. Whenever this happens there is an immediate need for removal of disc to prevent the other vertebrae and provide relief to patient from pain and disc symptoms. In such a case, the disc is removed partially or completely and an artificial disc is implanted in between two vertebrae. This is a highly complex method but improves spine functions. Spinal fusion is done where two spine bones are fused with each other to become one but this itself demand cascading and is not a proven treatment.

Why is disc replacement done?

Lumbar disc replacement surgery in Houston is chiefly done to serve the following purposes:
  •          Improve spinal mobility.
  •          Attenuate pain.
  •          Release muscle spasm and stiffness.
  •          Maintain appropriate spaces between to vertebras.
  •          Prevent disc degenerative disease.
  •          Retard spondylosis.
  •          Prevent osteoporosis.

What consists of a new disc replacement device by BYU Professors?

While the BYU professors were working towards a new replacement device, their primary focus was to keep the normal and healthy function of the spine intact. They carried out experiments on cadaver spines to ensure working of new disc as natural body discs. It was found that not only this, the new device gave superior results over metal and plastic artificial discs.

This new artificial disc consists of titanium strips which are made to mimic the normal disc functions due to its unique feature of flexibility.  The design is such that two titanium plates encircle flexible bending beams and fix into above and below vertebra by three fins. This does not form a hinge-like joint and thus these strips enhance flexibility and smooth functioning by joining together in a specific manner exactly like natural disc. Moreover, the spine starts to work as one whole section as bone grows between fins to lock the flexing mechanism. This prevents other discs to degenerate subsequently.

Description about traditional surgery in contrast to latest method

The new technique of lumbar spinal stenosis treatment, Houston achieves a higher response from patients as they are able to lead more active lives and are less subjected to adverse events. This is possible since the new device emulates all the natural disc functions.

The conventional surgical methods had high risk of infections due to usage of plastic and metal implants. They gave lesser resistance to spine as well as limit many spinal movements. With a higher chance of implant loosening, they also carried a lifelong risk of fracture in the vertebras.

Advantages of latest replacement device

  •          Early mobilization.
  •          Much reduced hospital stay.
  •          Improved quality of life.
  •          No need for repeated follow ups.
  •          Use of ‘cutting edge technology’ to give better results.
