Tips on becoming a good Caregiver


Caretakers are an important part of the life for those who are suffering from cancer. They provide physical, metal as well as emotional support to the patient. Caregivers maybe loved ones such as spouse, partner, family member or a friend. Usually they do not acquire care giving techniques, and do it out of love and compassion for the patient. Some of the chores according to Seattle wellness center of caregivers include,

  •          Feeding, dressing and bathing the patient
  •          Do everyday house chores
  •          Keeping track of the medication of the patient
  •          Making sure that the patient eats and sleeps properly on time
  •          Drive the patient to and from the doctor, also keep track of the appointments
  •          Discuss the patient’s condition and progress with the health care team
  •          Help patient live a normal life
How to become a good care giver

Even though care givers are not usually trained, a few steps if followed can help a care giver excel in his/ her duties. A good care giver is basically a person who is aware of all the developments of the patient’s condition and helps to give maximum comfort.

  •          Keep the patient involved in all the decision making process. In case the patient is making improper choices, inform him of his actions and their consequences.
  •          Set limits regarding a few actions such as, set limits regarding the talk about his cancer. Too much talk about the disease can end up into depression
  •          Take care of your own needs. While taking care of the patient, do not sideline your needs and wants
  •          Don’t try to meet every need of the patient by yourself. Reach out to others, be in constant touch with the health care team who shall be able to provide you with some relief
As stated, there is no harm in asking for help. Many friends and family members want to help in taking care of the patient. Here are a few tips to work along with friends and relatives;

  •          Make a list of the areas where you require help
  •          Have regular meetings with friends and family and keep them updated about the condition. Also use this meeting to time plan. You can even ask family and friends for the required help
  •          Be specific about the needs and see what input others give
  •          When someone calls back to help, make sure to cross check with the list and delegate chores accordingly
Caring for loved ones suffering from cancer is a difficult job and a very demanding one. Fulfilling all the duties might seem extremely difficult, but proper planning and execution can help you take proper care without exerting yourself. The ultimate reward is the love and blessings you will receive from the patient for all your hard work, which is the most satisfying reward.
