What are Some New Choices In Breast Cancer Surgery And Reconstruction?

If you are interested in immediate reconstruction- discuss it before with your surgeon.

Here are some suggestions for certain questions to ask your plastic surgeon.

  •     Would you advise me to have breast reconstruction at the same time as the cancer treatment surgery? If so, please explain why.
  •     Which method would be best for me? Do I have a choice?
  •     What are the advantages and the risks involved with each method?
  •     Will I have scars after the surgery?
  •     Which complications are most common?
  •     Can I have nipple reconstruction too?
Well, when to have the reconstruction done and which procedure must be followed; can only be worked upon considering the following things into account.

  •     The type and the stage of your breast cancer.
  •     The cancer treatment you are undertaking.
  •     Your choices and preferences.
Breast reconstruction is a major surgery involving many procedures one after the other.

It may interfere with your further radiotherapy and chemotherapy cancer treatments.

You will need to speak to your surgeon or breast care nurse to find out which type of reconstruction is suitable for you. Your surgical team aims to create a breast similar in size and shape to your own breasts. But a reconstructed breast won’t be identical. After the reconstruction, you may need to have further surgery to create a nipple too.

It is not always essential to have breast reconstruction in case of complete mastectomy. It is also possible to have breast reconstruction if you have had part of your breast removed, also called conservative surgery.
Breast reconstruction is used to restore the shape of your breast but inculcates more a feminine feeling.
The simplest and the most followed way to do a reconstruction are using an implant, either under the muscle or by using the technique of tissue expansion.

Both the techniques have pros and cons of their own. No technique can be rated better than the other as both have their practical limitations with them.

When the implant is placed under the chest muscle to replace the lost breast tissue, it is called sub muscular reconstruction. Results are better when it is done in case of skin sparing mastectomy – a type of surgical approach used in breast cancer treatment. An advantage of this method is that it usually looks good after the operation as it helps in coping the feeling of lost breasts and is a simple procedure.
But, this implant can change its shape when you move.

On the contrast, tissue expansion approach is a lengthy process involving one or two surgical operations. Moreover, it may take months to let your skin and muscle stretch.

The only advantage is that it is surprisingly elastic in most people and a natural breast form can usually be achieved in this way.

Now-a-days modern science has provided women a bunch of options for the reconstruction surgery.
So breast cancer survivors now have a better chance for improving the quality of their life.
